The European Music School Union is looking forward to deepening its cooperation with Young Music Talents in Europe (YMTE), a European network of specialised institutions that support highly talented young musicians on their pathway towards higher music education.

While EMU represents national associations of music and arts schools, YMTE brings together individual institutions with a strong focus on pre-college education and talent development. Many of these institutions are already connected to the wider EMU network, such as the East Helsinki Music Institute and the Johann Joseph Fux Konservatorium. YMTE also includes a number of specialised schools that are more closely linked to the European Association of Schools landscape.

Both organisations share a strong interest in supporting young people on their musical journey – from music and art school education to pre-college training and, where relevant, towards university studies. The cooperation aims at strengthening quality, knowledge exchange, and dialogue between different parts of the European music education landscape.

The main focus of collaboration will be talent development within an inclusive and sustainable framework. EMU and YMTE both believe that excellence and accessibility belong together. Future exchange will therefore not only focus on artistic quality, but also on wellbeing, equal opportunities, and sustainable pathways for young musicians.

As part of the cooperation, EMU and YMTE plan to organise a joint annual online Spotlight event on talent development and pre-professional education. This format will allow members from both networks to exchange experiences, present successful models, and discuss how young talents can best be supported in different national contexts. Over time, this could also develop into a dedicated Special Interest Group within EMU.

YMTE is also currently leading an Erasmus+ project on standards in talent development together with several European partners, including the Johann Joseph Fux Konservatorium and the Association Européenne des Conservatoires. The project aims to develop shared standards and quality principles for talent development across Europe.

For EMU members, this partnership offers valuable new perspectives and resources, closer links to specialised institutions, and more opportunities to learn from colleagues working in talent development and pre-college education across Europe.
