The Swiss Association of Music Schools (VMS) hosted the meeting of the Onda Latina regional group of the European Music School Union on 24–25 April 2026 at the Conservatoire Populaire de Genève.
On this occasion, each country presented recent developments in its sector, covering regulatory frameworks, pedagogical approaches, study pathways, cultural policies, and the structuring of national networks.
The main topics addressed included:
- The implementation of a national platform for mapping music schools and conservatories, along with a new legislative framework defining their roles and missions (France)
- The findings of the national Council of Education into the state of music education (Portugal)
- The rollout of a prevention programme addressing physical and psychological violence in music schools, as well as the results of an ASEM study highlighting increasing challenges in teacher recruitment (Switzerland)
- The development and benefits of adult music education, alongside the Catalan programme for the management of traditional instruments in Catalogna area. Types of instruments: tible, tenora, flabiol, tamborí…for the so-called cobla sets. (Spain)
- The foundations and implementation of a social project promoting universal access to music education in Emilia-Romagna, as well as the presentation of the Mare di Musica festival in Comacchio (Italy)
- The reform of music education curricula and the introduction of a governmental administrative platform for managing music schools (Luxembourg)
EMU activities and action programmes were also presented, including the CC-ECME project within the framework of Erasmus+, as well as the main events and strategic priorities led by the praesidium over the past year.
Participants also engaged in a joint discussion on advocating for music education in Europe, with the aim of defining a shared strategic approach and identifying key priorities for action.
The next Onda Latina meeting will take place in Portugal on 16–17 April 2027.
