A New Era for Streaming: Fair Music Beta Is Now Live and Open for Testing

The IMC has launched the beta version of Fair Music, a streaming platform built around fairness, transparency and artist empowerment. The platform is now open for testing.

Streaming has transformed how audiences discover and listen to music, but how value flows back to those who create it remains a persistent issue for the music sector. Fair Music aims to develop a different approach: a streaming ecosystem where artists can see how their earnings are generated, listeners have greater control over what they hear, and users can contribute feedback as the platform develops.

The beta version is now live, and the developers are inviting the music community to try the platform and share feedback.

What Fair Music offers

For artists, Fair Music is designed to provide greater visibility over earnings and simplify platform management. Registration is designed to be quick, while a simulated earnings dashboard shows how revenue is generated rather than simply providing a figure at the end of the month. Artists can choose between multiple payout options, upload their work in batches and across a range of formats, and manage their rights directly.

The platform also includes a marketplace, customisable recommendations, collaborative playlists and a governance model that gives artists a role in how the platform is run.

For listeners, the focus is on control and transparency. Features include easy signup, customisable recommendations, information about audio quality, social listening tools, a gamified community layer and in-app options for sending feedback directly to the team.

Why it matters for music education

For institutions preparing students for professional careers, questions around how music is distributed, valued and paid for are increasingly relevant to music education. At the beta stage, the platform also provides an opportunity for students and staff to test it and contribute feedback while it is still being developed.

Test Fair Music and share your feedback

The platform is now open for testing at music.fairmusic.io. The team particularly welcomes feedback from artists, educators, students and music professionals during the beta phase. In-app forms allow users to report bugs and suggest improvements, while analytics are handled securely without invasive tracking.

The Fair Music Project is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
