IMC’s network is present in 150 countries on all continents, with national music councils and international, regional and national music organisations as well as specialised organisations in the field of arts and culture. Through its members, IMC has direct access to over 1000 organisations and 600 million persons eager to develop and share knowledge and experience on diverse aspects of musical life.
Regional groups such als the EMC in Europe allow to develop regional programmes and activities that are specifically tailored to the needs of IMC members and partners in the given region.
The IMC’s Principles
Rights: The IMC’s mission and objectives honour human and cultural rights as enunciated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and in other relevant international covenants propagated by the United Nations, UNESCO and equivalent organisations.
Equality: In devising its actions, IMC gives equal value and respect to all musical cultures of the world.
Respect: IMC’s international cooperation is based on mutual tolerance, respect and dialogue.
Comprehensiveness: As a non-governmental, non-profit organisation, IMC is independent of any individual political ideology and supports the vibrancy of music and musical life in all its aspects – artistic, economic and societal – without prejudice or partiality.
The IMC’s Values
The IMC’s values are embedded in the Five Music Rights, proclaimed in 2001:
The right for all children and adults:
- to express themselves musically in full freedom
- to learn musical languages and skills;
- to have access to musical involvement through participation, listening, creation and information;
The right for musical artists:
- to develop their artistry and communicate through all media, with appropriate facilities at their disposal;
- to obtain fair recognition and remuneration for their work.
