The VdM initiative “Music Schools Strengthen What Connects Us!” is a joint nationwide umbrella initiative of the federal association and the regional associations of the VdM. It highlights that public music schools are indispensable places of education, culture, participation, and social cohesion. As “third places,” they bring people together across generations, embrace cultural diversity, and foster social connection, thereby also contributing to the promotion of democracy.
The aim of the initiative is to sustainably strengthen the social, political, and public perception of public music schools as system-relevant educational and cultural institutions. This is intended to secure municipal and state funding, enhance the professional profile of music school teachers, increase political support in times of crisis, and stabilize the landscape of music schools in all municipalities and federal states.
The target groups include policymakers and administrative bodies at the federal, state, and municipal levels, educational partners such as schools and daycare centers, civil society and the business sector, the organization’s own members, the media, and the general public—from children and young people to adults.
The central thematic areas are participation, education, democracy, diversity, future skills, securing skilled professionals, and the intrinsic value of music.
